The Undercurrent

Tsukiji Market, Tokyo—

My father’s favorite meal came from the sea. It was lobster.

Living in Spain as a child we would go to the sea and watch fishermen bring in the catch. A fish market comes to life in the early morning. It is surrounded by the scent of salt water, and is still one of my favorite places to visit. Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market was also one of those magical places. Then it closed in 2018.

These pictures are my homage to fishermen, resilient and weatherworn, especially those who lost their livelihood with the 3.11.2011 tsunami, but still they returned to the sea. Even now in Fukushima, when radioactive water is poured into the Pacific, they persevere.
