Bio

Magdalena Solé is an award-winning photographer, known for her sensitive expressions of culture through distinctive color artistry. Born in Spain, and raised in Switzerland, Solé lived in New York City for more than thirty years before moving to the deep countryside of Vermont. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in film from Columbia University, New York. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and is represented in major museum collections. In addition to her practice as a professional photographer and filmmaker, Solé teaches photo workshops, lectures on photography, creates artists' books, and works as an independent photo editor. 

The film Man On Wire, a tale about tightrope walker Philippe Petit, directed by James Marsh, for which Solé was the Production Manager, won an Oscar for best Documentary Feature in 2009

Her photo book New Delta Rising, published by the University Press of Mississippi (UPM), was released in 2012. The Wall Street Journal called her images: “lushly colorful, formally striking, restless, and electrifying.” 

Her recent book Cuba: Hasta Siempre, published by UPM, was released in 2020.  It captures the end of a political époque marked by the death of Fidel Castro.

When the world stopped during Covid, Solé hosted an online forum, named 6-Feet-Apart, to connect photographers from all over the world, and inspire through lectures and presentations by the most notable photographers of our time.

During that same period, Solé created a handbound limited edition set of seven artist’s books about Japan. In addition, she crafted a smaller artist book, also a limited edition, titled, Floating Weeds. Both will be released in 2024.
